One of my favourite places to grab a bite to eat is the Devonshire Bakery, situated on the High Street.
Other Useful Information:
Before starting any walk, I recommend checking out the local weather. This walk, in particular, can become extremely muddy in places, especially in wet weather. If you are walking in wet weather, I recommend wearing waterproof hiking boots or socks. Also, take extra care in some places due to unfenced cliff edges.
Parts of the trail are well signposted as they form part of The Sandstone Trail; however, I recommend using a map and compass or even a mobile route finder such as AllTrails.
Although the walk takes only 3 hours, please ensure you have plenty of fluids, snacks, and extra warm clothing or waterproofs. Itās generally an easy walk, but some climbs can be quite strenuous in places, especially for novice walkers.
The Frodsham and Helsby Hill Circular Route:
The official route starts halfway up Frodsham Hill; however, you can begin at any point from Frodsham town centre and make your way up the hill.
The first part of the walk takes you up and over Frodsham Hill towards Woodhouse Hill.
Frodsham Hill is quite wooded, making seeing views from the top difficult. However, the walk through the woods is just a delight! Yes, itās a little strenuous getting up the hill, especially after walking 6km into Frodsham from home, as I did, but the scenery is beautiful.
As you make your way to the summit, youāll be surrounded by nature. Lots of cute grey squirrels will cross your path, searching the undergrowth and chasing each other up the trees. They are a joy to watch. Unfortunately, they seemed a little camera shy and would do a runner every time I got my camera out!
Walking up the hill, you will also find many benches to stop and catch your breath if needed. Once you reach the summit of Woodhouse Hill, you will find a perfectly positioned bench to sit on and enjoy the fantastic views across the Mersey Estuary. Unfortunately, the day I decided to walk the route, the weather was a little mixed, and the views could have been better on a clear day, but they were still pretty impressive!
After youāve had enough of the views, the route takes you along the cliff edge and then back down the hill through some more woodland. If itās been raining recently, this area will be muddy, so watch your step!
As you continue down the track, you will walk past a small lake and around the side of a caravan park. The route will then take you down a small lane past a local pony sanctuary, Spirt of the Herd. This incredible charity rescues and rehabilitates horses, which are then used to help children, young people and adults with learning needs, lacking in confidence, or suffering from stress or anxiety.
A few metres after the pony sanctuary, you will need to turn left down a small lane and up towards another road at the top. Turn left again, walk up the hill a little and then make a right turn onto a small track leading you across a couple of fields.
Eventually, you will merge onto another small track, past a farm and towards Helsby Hill. At the top of the track, you will see signs for Helsby Hill, so you wonāt get lost.
Once you reach the summit of Helsby Hill, youāll be met again by some beautiful views! Be careful in bad weather, as it can get windy, so donāt venture too near the edge!
The route then takes you down through the woods, eventually leading you back towards Frodsham. The track down can be quite tricky and muddy, especially in wet weather! However, the walk back through the woods is really lovely.
Once youāre back in Frodsham, why not take a little walk around the town and admire the pretty surroundings or even have a bite to eat or drink in one of the lovely pubs?
